The Italians are really good at food and desserts, and it’s all about simplicity and flavour. And Affogato is probably one of the best and simplest desserts you can make!
Many people think you have to spend hours in the kitchen and use 2o ingredients to make something delicious and pretty that will impress your guests. And while I’m sure you will end up with something that looks and tastes great, sometimes simpler just is better. And this is most certainly one of those cases.
Affogato is Italian, and means drowned. Which obviously is a perfect name for this dessert, as it’s basically ice cream drowned in coffee 😍
All you need to make Affogato is ice cream and coffee. It really is that simple!
Not only does it taste heavenly, but it looks really nice as well. The dark coffee against the white ice cream is so pretty! And then you get the contrast of the warm against the cold as well. It really is such a complex dessert, even with just two ingredients!
Since there are only two ingredients, don’t be cheap. Use the good stuff. Get a good ice cream, and one that’s not too soft. If you use a soft ice cream, it will melt quicker.
Also use a good coffee. For the love of God, no instant coffee! If you use instant you are no longer allowed to make Affogato 😂 Make espresso if you can, or make a strong dark coffee in your french press/cafetière. You need a strong, dark flavour to contrast the ice cream.
Then all you have to do is pour the coffee over the ice cream and let it take you to wonderland!
- Vanilla ice cream
- Make the coffee
- Place two scoops of ice cream in each bowl or glass
- Pour the coffee over and eat!
- Use good quality ice cream and coffee. Since there are only two ingredients, you will taste the difference!
